Evanescence je američki rok bend koji su 1995. u glavnom gradu Arkanzasa osnovali pevačica i pijanista Amy Lee i gitarista Ben Moody. Njih dvoje se se upoznali 1994. u kampu za mlade u Little Rocku kada je Ben čuo Amy kako na klaviru svira I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That). Počeli su zajedno pisati pesme koje su se u početku mogle čuti na radiju, a kasnije i na njihovim živim nastupima. Ubrzo su postali veoma popularni na tim prostorima.
Nakon kratkog eksperimentiranja s nazivima Childish Intentions i Stricken, odlučili su bendu daju naziv Evanescence što znači nestajati, polako bledeti. Amy Lee se ime dopalo jer "zvuči misteriozno i mračno i stvara sliku u slušaočevoj glavi".

Nakon dva E.P. mini-albuma (prvi, Evanescence EP iz 1998. čijih je stotinjak kopija služilo kao promotivni materijal u ranim godinama benda, drugi Sound Asleep EP iz 1999. poznat i kao Whisper EP, bio je ograničen na 50 primeraka. Ovi albumi sadrže demo verzije nekih pesama s debi albuma Fallen) i demo diska Origin bend je 2000. objavio prvi studijski album pod nazivom Fallen u saradnji sa izdavačkom kućom Wind-up Records. Prodato je više od 15 miliona kopija širom sveta a album je grupi doneo dve Gremi nagrade.
Godinu dana kasnije, grupa je izdala album koji sadrži snimak koncerta pod nazivom Anywhere but Home prodat u milion primeraka, a 2006. drugi studijski album The Open Door od kojeg je do sada prodato oko 5 miliona kopija.

U međuvremenu je došlo do promene sastava benda. Jedan od osnivača, Ben Moody je 2003. napustio bend, kao i basist Will Boyd 2006.
Juna 2009. godine Amy Lee je na oficijalnom sajtu grupe objavila da se uveliko radi na novom albumu koji treba da bude objavljen drugom polovinom 2010. godine.
Sadašnji sastav benda čine: Amy Lee – vokali i klavir, Terry Balsamo – gitara, Tim McCord – bas gitara, Will "Science" Hunt – bubnjevi.

Evanescence kroz vreme

Fallen i Anywhere but Home (2002-2005)

Početkom 2003. grupi se pridružilo nekoliko članova. U međuvremenu, grupa je potpisala ugovor sa izdavačkom grupom Wind-up Records i počela s radom na prvom studijskom albumu Fallen. Promociju albuma napravili su u saradnji sa Nintendom, kompanijom koja se bavi prodajom video igara. Oni su bili promoteri njihove turneje 2003.

Fallen je proveo 43 nedelje u vrhu Billboard liste najprodavanijih albuma, sa preko 15 miliona prodatih kopija širom sveta, od toga čak 7 miliona u SAD, gde je album dostigao sedmostruki platinasti tiraž. Na Billboard Top 200 album se zadržao 104 nedelje, a jedan je od osam albuma ikada koji su uspeli da se zadrže barem godinu dana u prvih 50.
Prvi singl sa albuma Fallen, Bring Me to Life, na kojem gostuje Paul McCoy iz grupe 21 Stones bio je svetski hit, koji se našao na 5. mestu Američke Billboard Hot 100 liste, kao i na prvom mestu u Velikoj Britaniji. Singl je 2004. osvojio dve Grammy nagrade i to za "Najbolje hard rok izvođenje" i "Najboljeg novog izvođača", a bio je nominovan u još dve kategorije. Usledio je Going Under, popularna rock balada My Immortal i Everybody's Fool.
Pesme Bring Me to Life i My Immortal korištene su u akcionom filmu Derdevil.

U oktobru 2003, tokom evropske turneje albuma Fallen, Ben Moody je napustio bend zbog "kreativnih nesuglasica". U intervjuu nekoliko meseci kasnije Amy je rekla da da se ništa nije promenilo, verovatno ne bi bili u stanju objave drugi album.
Većinu ljudi je to zbunjivalo jer su njih dvoje od početka benda zajedno vodili bend kao najbolji prijatelji. Kasnije je Amy čak dodala da je njegov odlazak predstavljao olakšanje s obzirom na tenziju koja je postojala dok je on bio u bendu. Moody-ja je zamenio Terry Balsamo iz sastava Cold.
Godine 2004. grupa je objavila kompilaciju Anywhere but Home na kojoj se nalazi snimak koncerta u Parizu kao i slike iz bekstejdža. Na disku se nalaze i prethodno neobjavljene pesme Missing, koja je kao internacionalni singl dostigla prvo mesto u Španiji, Breathe No More korištena u filmu Elektra, Farther Away i Thoughtless.

The Open Door (2005-2009)

Jula 2006. Will Boyd je napustio bend a na njegovo mesto je došao Tim McCord. Rad na albumu je sporo napredovao, što zbog sporednih projekata članova benda, što zbog velikog pritiska na leđima Amy Lee da album bar ponovi uspeh prethodnika.
Iako je album trebao biti završen do marta 2006, izdavanje je odložila izdavačka kuća kako bi se napravilo nekoliko promena na prvom singlu Don't Call Me When You're Sober koji se pojavio tek avgusta 2006. Samo u prvoj nedelji, album je u SAD prodan u više od 400 hiljada primeraka dostižući prvo mesto Billboard Top 200 liste. Muzički spot za pesmu Don't Call Me When You're Sober baziran je na bajci o Crvenkapici, a snimljeno je još tri spota i to za pesme Lithium, Sweet Sacrifice i Good Enough.
Tokom 2006. bend je održao turneju po gradovima širom Kanade, Sjedinjenih Američkih Država i Evrope.

4-og maja 2007, John LeCompt je objavio da je otpušten iz benda Evanescence, i takođe potvrdio da je bubnjar Rocky Gray odlučio da napusti bend. Wind-up izdao je saopštenje 17-og maja 2007, u kom govori da će se dva člana Dark New Day, bubnjar Will Hunt i gitarista Troy McLawhorn, pridružiti bendu kako bi zamenili LeCompt-a i Gray-a. Prvobitno je objavljeno da će Hunt i McLawhorn svirati sa Evanescence do kraja turneje Family Values Tour koja se završava u septembru 2007, ali su obojica nastavili da sviraju u bendu i na turneji The Open Door.

Od 2009. do sada
U pripremi je novi album za koji Amy najavljuje da će muzika evoluirati i postati „bolja, jača i ineteresantnija.“

Muzički stil
Kritičari su podeljeni u tvrdnjama o tome je li Evanescence rok ili metal bend, ali se svi slažu da su oni jedan od najpopularnijih gothic rock bendova današnjice. Veoma često ih upoređuju sa ostalim komercijalnim bendovima poput rock sastava Linkin Park ili simfonijskim metal bendovima Nightwish ili Within Temptation.
Za razliku od kritičara, Amy svoju muziku vidi kao rock sa mešanim uticajima metala, klasične muzike i elektronike.
