David Ryan Adams rođen je 5. studenog 1974. godine. Američki je alt-country/rock pjevač i tekstopisac iz Jacksonvillea u Sjevernoj Karolini. Nastupao je s grupom Whiskeytown, a zatim napustio bend i izdao solo album „Heartbreaker“ 2000. godine. Godine 2009. izdao je i dvije knjige kratkih priča i pjesama.

Ryana su odgojile majka i baka jer ih je otac napustio kada je Ryanu bilo devet godina. Njegova majka, profesorica engleskog jezika i književnosti, ohrabrila je sina da čita pa se on još kao dijete upoznao s djelima Edgara Allana Poea, Jacka Kerouaca, Henryja Millera i Sylvije Plath. Kada mu je bilo osam godina, na majčinu je pisaćem stroju počeo pisati kratke priče i pjesme. S četrnaest je godina počeo svirati električnu gitaru, a ubrzo se pridružio lokalnom bendu Blank Label koji nije bio duga vijeka. Odustao je od škole u prvom tjednu desetog razreda, uselivši se u unajmljenu kuću izvan Jacksonvillea. U to je vrijeme kratko nastupao s dva lokalna benda, Ass i The Lazy Stars.

Karijeru započinje kao petnaestogodišnjak u grupi Patty Duke Syndrome, a pod golemim utjecajem Hüsker Dü te alter rocka i punka osamdesetih. Zahvaljujući učestalim koncertima stekli su kultno sljedbeništvo, no kada je napunio 19. godinu Adams napušta P. D. S. i zajedno s violinisticom Caitlin Cary te gitaristom Philom Wandscherom osniva Whiskeytown. Mnogi članovi benda smatrali su Adamsa teškom osobom što je rezultiralo s nekoliko mijenjanja postava u petogodišnjoj karijeri grupe.

Samostalnu karijeru pjevača-tekstopisca započeo je u vrijeme kraha Whiskeytowna nakon što se grupa svela samo na Adamsa, violinisticu Cary te studijske glazbenike. Prvijenac „Heartbreaker“ objavljen je 2000. na etiketi Bloodshut Records i u hipu dobiva podršku kritike, publike, pa i zagovor utjecajnih osoba s pop scene poput Eltona Johna, koji kumuje Adamsovom ugovoru za Universal, odnosno njihovu „country podetiketu“ Lost Highway. „Heartbreaker“ je realiziran u suradnji s Gillian Welch i Davidom Rawlingsom, glazbenicima sklonim tradicionalnijem bluegrass countryju, no glavni pečat albumu daje iznimni autorski rukopis Adamsa, superiorna izvedba te promišljene folk-rock country stilizacije.

Sljedećem albumu „Gold“ prethodilo je objavljivanje oproštajnog albuma Whiskeytowna „Pneumonia“ koji je prije samostalan Ryanov projekt nego plod zajedničkog autorstva s raspuštenom grupom. „Gold“ je pak potvrdio da panegirici kojima je kritika dočekala debi „Heartbreaker“ nisu bili slučajni. Naime, Adams je očito bio mnogo više od „novog Paula Westerberga ili Grama Parsonsa za dvijetisućite“ budući da je upravo „Gold“ (sa svojom 21 skladbom) pokazao širinu njegovih glazbenih interesa. Zanimljivo je da su se u videospotu za „New York, New York“ s albuma „Gold“, snimanom 7. rujna 2001., tjedan dana prije napada 11. rujna, u pozadini pojavljivali tornjevi blizanci, dok je Adams ispred njih pjevao „I'll always love you, though, New York“.

„Demolition“ je objavljen 2002. i album je demo snimaka koje pokazuju da je riječ o autoru i izvođaču vrijednom svake pažnje. Naime, „Demolition“ je dao 13 brojeva posve uravnjene kvalitete i na tragu materijala s ranije objavljenih albuma, a snimke su probrane iz obilja neobjavljenog materijala s Adamsovih pet studijskih sessiona.

Potvrđujući svoju radoholičnost, Adams je 2003. objavio čak tri albuma.„Rock & Roll“ zamišljen je i snimljen kao osobna posveta new waveu i osobito Smithsima, dok su dva EP-ja, odnosno mini albuma naslovljena „Love Is Hell Pt 1 & Pt 2“, a objavljena kao pojedinačna izdanja a kasnije i kao cjelovit album, donijela prigušeni baladni materijal.

„Cold Roses“ objavio je dvije godine kasnije. Riječ je o dvostrukom albumu snimljenom u suradnji s Cardinalsima, kojim se Adams vraća ishodištima: country rocku Whiskeytowna i Neila Younga. Jedva četiri mjeseca kasnije, koncem rujna 2005. ponovno u suradnji s Cardinalsima objavio je novi album „Jacksonville City Nights“. Kao svojevrsni nastavak žanrovskih propitkivanja započet s „Rock & Rollom“, album je donio skladbe u tradicionalnom country izdanju. Nakon što je objavio dva albuma s Cardinalsima, Adam je krajem godine objavio i samostalni album „29“. Omot albuma naslikao je sam Adams. Snimljen bez country-rock zvuka Cardinalsa, ovaj album je zvučni i emocionalni prethodnik „Love Is Hell“.

Producirao je album Willieja Nelsona „Songbird“, dok su on i Cardinalsi bili prateći bend. Album je izdan u listopadu 2006. Bio je i predgrupa Nelsonu u Hollywood Bowlu kasnije te jeseni, na koncertu na kojem je Phil Lesh svirao bas i gdje je odsvirano nekoliko pjesama Grateful Dead. Krajem 2006. počeo je eksperimentirati s hip-hop glazbom, dodavši na svoju službenu stranicu 18 pjesama pod raznim pseudonimima, s duhovitim i nelogičnim stihovima.

Nakon što je najavio pa kasnije otkazao koncert u Stonehengeu, Adams je 26. lipnja 2007. objavio svoj deveti album, nazvan „Easy Tiger“. Na albumu su se našle mnoge pjesme koje su izvedene tijekom turneja iz 2006., kao i neke starije pjesme koje su do tada ostale neobjavljene. Kasnije te godine, Adams je otkrio kako je pretrpio „dug ovisnički period“ koji je završio 2006. Natuknuo je kako je miješao heroin s kokainom te uzimao alkohol i tablete. Svladao je ovisnost uz pomoć svoje djevojke, Jessice Joffe, koristeći terapiju Valiumom i često posjećujući sastanke Anonimnih alkoholičara.

23. listopada 2007. Adams je objavio „Follow the Lights“, EP s tri nove pjesme i koncertnim verzijama drugih objavljenih pjesama. Pojavio se i kao gostujući glazbenik na albumu i DVD-u Cowboy Junkiesa, „Trinity Revisited“, obilježavanja 20. godišnjice njihova klasičnog albuma „The Trinity Session“.

Objavljuje još dva albuma s Cardinalsima – „Cardinoloy“ (2008) i „III/IV“ (2010), a 18. svibnja 2010. još jedan solo album – „Orion“, ovoga puta pod utjecajem kanadskog heavy metal benda Voivod.

Ryan Adams također je objavio i dvije knjige: „Infinity Blues“ i „Hello Sunshine“. „Infinity Blues“ knjiga je poezije slobodnog stiha, a „Hello Sunshine“ zbirka pjesama i kratkih priča. Obje su objavljene 2009. godine.

Za 10. listopada 2011. najavljeno je izdavanje nogova solo albuma „Ashes & Fire“, s Norom Jones kao gošćom.
