Bend Coldplay osnovan je 1998. godine u Londonu, u Engleskoj. Čine ga Chris Martin (pjevač, klavijaturis i gitarist), Jonny Buckland (gitarist), Guy Berryman (basist) i Will Champion (bubnjar).

Martin i Buckland upoznali su se za vrijeme studiranja na londonskom sveučilištu 1996. godine. Obojica su slušali istu vrstu muzike pa su došli na ideju da osnuju sastav. Nazvali su ga Pectoralz, a kada im se pridružio Berryman, 1997. godine mijenjaju naziv u Starfish. Nastupali su u manjim lokalnim klubovima. U to su vrijeme pronašli i menadžera te im se pridružio Champion. Naposlijetku su se odlučili nazvati Coldplay na prijedlog jednog kolege koji je koristio isto ime za svoj sastav koji više nije svirao.

Nastupni album „Parachutes“ bio je 2000. godine u Velikoj Britaniji dočekan s golemom pažnjom koju je uvjetovala hvaljena turneja s Gomezom te hvalospjevi koje je engleski glazbeni tisak nakon EP-ja „The Safety“, „Brothers & Sisters“ te „The Blue Room“ spjevao vokalnim sposobnostima frontmana Chrisa Martina. Debut Coldplaya dao je glazbu na tragu rukopisa Radioheada u najboljem izdanju uz sugestivan Martinov vokal na razmeđu između Jeffa Buckleya i Scotta Walkera, te pop melodije i aranžmane u kojima dominiraju klavirski naglasci i široki zamasi akustične gitare.

„Parachutes“ je bio album bez slabe točke, a nakon hvalospjeva kritike, podrške publike, pet milijuna prodanih primjeraka i prestižne Mercury nagrade, 2002. Coldplay izdaju drugi, jednako uspješan, album naslovljen „A Rush of Blood to the Head“. Nakon objave albuma, sastav kreće na veliku turneju na kojoj su obišli čak pet kontinenata. Album je osvojio nagradu Grammy za najbolji album alternativne muzike u 2003. godini.

Godine 2005. slijedi novi megauspjeh – „X&Y“. Album je imao sve odlike prethodnih projekata: upečatljiv Martinov falset, britke gitare, bogate klavijature te prepoznatljiv ritam s „breakovima“ u dramatičnoj završnici broja. Coldplay su se i ovim albumom pokazali nasljednicima McCartneyevog baladnog opusa kao primjerice u „What If“ dok su u drugim brojevima poput „Fix You“ uspješno podsjetili i na Petera Gabriela iz dana Genesisa te zvučnu „tapiseriju“ Pink Floyda i Radioheada.

U jesen 2006. godine, Coldplay počinje raditi na svom četvrtom studijskom albumu „Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends“. Chris Martin ga je opisao kao novi pravac Coldplaya: promjenu u odnosu na prethodna tri albuma, koje oni zovu „trilogijom“. Album je u samo tri dana nakon izlaska prodan u više od 300 000 primjeraka, čime je postao jedan od najbrže prodavanih albuma u povijesti Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva. Gitarist Joe Satriani optužio je Coldplay za kršenje autorskih prava na sudu u Los Angelesu 2008. godine. Tvrdi da je pjesma „Viva la Vida“ plagijat njegovog solo djela „If I Could Fly“ iz 2004. godine. Sastav je odbacio bilo kakve optužbe te je tužba odbačena nakon postignutog dogovora izvan suda. Godine 2009. sastav je osvojio tri Grammy nagrade – za pjesmu godine („Viva la Vida“), najbolji rock album („Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends“) i najbolju vokal izvedbu.

„Mylo Xyloto“ njihov je peti studijski album izdan 2011. godine. Martin je otkrio kako je najveća inspiracija za album bila globalna recesija. Zanimljivo je i to da sastav objavljuje strip „Mylo Xyloto“ koji je napisao Mark Osborne. Prvi nastavak već je objavljen za potrebe strip festivala San Diego Comic-Con International, a svi nastavci bit će objavljeni do veljače 2013. godine.
